Eagle Rock is a hip Los Angeles neighborhood bordering the cities of Glendale and Pasadena to the northeast of Downtown LA, and the neighborhood is named for a huge boulder that casts an eagle-shaped shadow. Eagle Rock’s main commercial strips along Colorado Boulevard and Eagle Rock Boulevard feature boutiques, vintage stores, trendy coffee shops, craft beer bars, and great neighborhood restaurants.
Eagle Rock’s diverse homes range from pretty Craftsman bungalows to spacious estates rising into the surrounding hillsides. The neighborhood features many historic and architecturally significant properties. Some of the common styles in Eagle Rock include Art Deco, Mission Revival, and Streamline Moderne homes.

Eagle Rock has humorously been called the neighborhood where hipsters go to settle down and raise a family. The neighborhood has a similarly cool and easygoing vibe to the neighboring Eastside hipster havens of Silver Lake and Highland Park. Eagle Rock’s well regarded public schools are a big draw for young families. The neighborhood is also home to Occidental College. John Steinbeck taught at Occidental College while working on his early manuscripts, and Barack Obama gave an early speech there long before becoming president. Ben Affleck was a student at Occidental College when he and Matt Damon wrote Good Will Hunting. Eagle Rock is also a popular filming location for Hollywood pictures. Reservoir Dogs, Top Gun, and The Hunt for Red October are a few of the major films in which the neighborhood has appeared on the screen.

Eagle Rock’s main street along Colorado Boulevard features an eclectic array of trendy independent businesses. The Oinkster
is a hip spot serving gourmet burgers, specialty sandwiches, and craft beer amid retro diner décor. Longstanding Casa Bianca
has been in the neighborhood since the 1950s. The menu includes delicious pizzas and Italian sandwiches alongside a curated selection of wine and local Eagle Rock Brewery beers. Colorado Donuts
is another Colorado Boulevard stalwart, with a loyal following among Eagle Rock residents. The tempting treats here include signature donuts plus muffins, sweet rolls, and pastries. Swork Coffee
is the perfect place to start the day, with premium espresso blends from La Colombe Coffee Roasters. Found Coffee
is another great choice for your caffeine fix, with artisanal blends showcasing some of the best local coffee roasters.
When you want something stronger, upscale dive bar The Fable is a dependable Colorado Boulevard favorite. The Fable
pours local craft beers and mixes great cocktails in an inviting atmosphere. Colorado Wine Company
combines a wine bar and store with imported varietals from across the globe. Head to one of Colorado Wine Company’s weekly tasting events to sample exceptional worldwide varietals.
Over on Eagle Rock Boulevard, Senor Fish
is a relaxed cantina offering patio dining and great seafood, tacos, and regional Mexican specialties. Japanese fusion eatery Mia Sushi
has a fine selection of expertly prepared sushi, sashimi, and tempura. Max City BBQ
serves mouthwatering Southern-style wood-smoked meats. The Bucket
has been an institution on Eagle Rock Boulevard since 1935. This snug spot’s menu features delicious signature burgers, burritos, and specialty topped fries.
Things to Do
In the northeast corner of the neighborhood, the Eagle Rock Canyon Trail
offers a straightforward one-mile hike leading to a wonderful view of the community’s namesake Eagle Rock. The nearby Eagle Rock Recreation Center
features baseball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts, multipurpose sports fields, a gym, and a children’s play area. There are many adult and youth programs at Eagle Rock Recreation Center, including flag football, gymnastics, music classes, and summer and winter camps. The adjacent Eagle Rock Dog Park
provides a fenced-in off-leash area for pups. The Center for the Arts
on Colorado Boulevard hosts concerts, film screenings, and arts programs covering a wide variety of disciplines. This wonderful community resource is housed within a historic Mission Revival building, which originally opened in 1915 as the Carnegie Library. Peekaboo Playland
is a popular choice for children’s birthday parties, with numerous creative play areas. In October, Eagle Rock Music Festival
brings an eclectic lineup of outdoor performances to Colorado Boulevard.
